Historical background to Trogir

The Illyrians were the first nation that had settlements on the grounds of today’s Trogir. In the 3rd century BC Trogir was a Greek settlement called Tragurion which developed into a major port in the Roman times. During the migration in Croatia, Trogir was a shelter for the citizens of the destroyed Salona. From the 9th century Trogir was led by the Croatian rulers.

In 1107 it became a town led by the Hungarian-Croatian king Koloman. 16 years later it was conquered and almost totally demolished by the Saracens. But Trogir recovered soon and gained a powerful economical prosperity in the 12th and 13th century.

It was the year of 1242 when King Bela IV found refuge there while running from the Tatars. In the 13th and the 14th centuries the citizens of Trogir most frequently elected the Šubić family for their dukes and Mladen III (1348) was, according to the inscription in the Cathedral of Trogir, called "the shield of the Croats" and was one of the most prominent Šubićes. The Venetian rule began in 1420 and lasted for a longer period of time. Venice fell in 1797 and Trogir came under the Austrian power, which lasted until 1918. In 1918 it was returned to the parent country.
